Winter Macro Photography Idea – Close up Corkscrews! – Watch on YouTube
We’re always looking for winter macro photography ideas. The nights roll in, the plants go dormant and the weather is too cold to enjoy shooting outside. Luckily, as the festive season gets closer, there’s new joys on the horizon, in this case, wine!
Corkscrew Macro Photography
We love going into the kitchen to find new macro photography subjects. There’s a host of different shapes, materials and reflective utensils to play with.
We picked out a waiters mate bottle opener because this particular item has a mix of all of these interesting features. Contrast between the wooden handle, reflective metal and interesting shapes.
The first thing to do with a subject like this is to explore. Use your macro lens to look around the various features of the subject and find the parts that are most interesting to you.
Things always look very different up close so relying on your naked eyes to find good angles and aspects is not always reliable. Make sure to put your subject under the lens to find something cool to look at, even if nothing else is set up yet.
Lighting and Colour
Of ourse, taking photos of some common kitchen items is not all that interesting on it’s own. We need to add some photographic tricks to take our photos from simple snapshots of a common item, to being more like abstract art.
We’re using the Adaptalux Studio to add some colour and lighting to our corkscrew. Lighting is a fantastic tool for making mundane subjects look visually appealing and eye catching. Especially when you can introduce some colourd light too.
You don’t have to go overboard with colour, sometimes subtle hints are enough to elevate a photo above the norm. This is especially true when you have a reflective subject like our corkscrew.
Every light source reflects in the metal. And when you have a mixture of surfaces, you can get really creative! We recommend using some continuous light for a shoot like this, so you can always see what your results look like as you move your lighting around. LED lights remove a lot of the guesswork as you set up your shoot.
Focus and Depth
This is a winter macro photography idea that benefits from experimentation. That goes for focus too, you may want to try some focus stacking to reveal the full depth of your corkscrew.
However it’s far from mandatory, sometimes the best shots are the softer ones. Especially if you want to highlight a particular feature, or make your images a little more abstract.
So if you want a fun little subject to shoot this winter, try opening a bottle of wine!
