Together, we absolutely smashed our goal for the Adaptalux Stabiliser, thank you so much for all who supported the campaign! In total, we have raised over £6,945.
What Happens Now?
In the coming weeks, we will be sending out surveys to collect your addresses and pledge details (colour etc). Please keep an eye out for this.
Over the next 14 days, Kickstarter will collect your money and then it will be deposited into our bank account after this period. We are anticipating the 3D printer to get here on the 27th of February and from that point, we will start printing and optimising the design for 3D printing. Once the printer settings are optimised for making the stabilisers at the best possible quality, we will begin. We should be able to start shipping in March.
I Missed Out on the Kickstarter Campaign 🙁

A few words from Sam…
As the creator of this project, seeing this product in the hands of some fantastic photographers and videographers is something I have dreamed about for over 3 years now. Myself and the team really cannot wait to see what you can do with your Adaptalux over the coming months.
Now we have fulfilled all of our Kickstarter awards, our focus will now shift on to growing this company, which will lead onto new products been developed. I designed Adaptalux to be backwards compatible, which means any future products will work with the product you own now, so watch this space. Our goal is to achieve ultimate studio control in a miniature environment and the successful completion of this Kickstarter campaign is the first steps to accomplishing this.
I would just like to thank a couple of people who have helped myself and the team push through and get this project complete. We all owe a special thanks to Billie and Margaret (My Mum and Nanna!) who have kindly helped us assemble and ship Adaptalux over the last 4 months. Their help has meant the world to myself, Martin and the rest of the team and it has proved invaluable to getting this project complete by the shipping dates we set.
Last but not least, I would like to thank you, our amazing Kickstarter backers. Your support and loyalty has really meant the world to us, even through the tough times at the beginning of this year, where we had to announce shipping would be delayed. Myself and the team have being amazed with the positive & supportive messages throughout the last 18 months, they have really made a difference to team morale. Without your support, this product wouldn’t have became a reality. You all deserve a massive pat on the back for believing in this product and we really hope you think the wait has been worth it. Thank you.
Thats it for now, another update will follow in the coming weeks.
Firstly, we have being chosen to be a finalist at the Lucie Tech Awards this year for the category “best continuous light source”. Sorry for the silence once again, we have been focused on fixing a Chinese supplier issue on one of the parts, which was mentioned in the previous update. All the images throughout this update have been taken by Adaptalux users.
CHINESE SUPPLIER ISSUE
As we highlighted in our last update, our shipping schedule had taken a hit as a second batch of parts for Adaptalux were not correct due to our Chinese supplier making a mistake. This slowed us down considerably with our assembly and shipping process as it was such a vital part. Throughout this month we have been working with them to identify what went wrong and how to improve there production methods to ensure this does not happen again. We are pleased to report the issue has now been solved and the fully working parts are now on the way to us in the UK, we expect to receive them on Thursday.
Throughout the last few weeks, we have being shipping out 10 a week of the Ultimate pack award using parts from the good batch whilst we solved the supplier issue. From Thursday onwards, we will be solely focused on shipping and aiming to ship out 50 a week of the Ultimate Pack and following that 80 a week of the smaller packs. We aim to have all of the KS awards & website pre-orders shipped out by the 21st of October.

Apologies for the few weeks of silence on Kickstarter again, we have being very busy.
We are thrilled to announce that today, we shipped out the first Kickstarter award, the BETA TESTER packs. This award consisted of a Adaptalux ultimate pack, and meant they get the product 4 weeks in advance to everyone else. We can’t wait to see what they can do with their Adaptalux kit!
We can also happily announce that the Adaptalux App is now available to download for iOS on the App Store. As mentioned numerous times now, an Android version of the app will follow towards the end of summer. Please, go and download the app and start to get a feel of what it can do and how it will help you create amazing photos and videos using your Adaptalux products. You will be able to see some Adaptalux lighting set-ups Sam has put on the World Library for you to try, once you receive your Adaptalux studio. Hopefully, our BETA award testers will put more on over the next 4 weeks.

Sam took some time out a few weeks back to re-design the Adaptalux website. Go check it out and let us know what you think. http://www.adaptalux.com
A Small Favour
Now we have shipped the first units of Adaptalux, we would ask that you help us grow the Adaptalux community by sharing Adaptalux content on social media and telling your friends. The more people who get on board, the better this product will become as a amazing lighting tool. We are hoping that Adaptalux will inspire and teach other photographers and videographers to try different lighting techniques, to make their photos and videos even better!
Thats it for now everyone, and we hope the excitement is really building now. We know it has being a patient wait, but we really think you will love the product.
Sorry for the radio silence over the last 6 weeks! We have been busy working really hard on getting Adaptalux ready for launch.
The photographs embedded in this update are closeup shots of olive oil on water, using Adaptalux. All photos utilise the finished Lighting Arms, Colour Filters, Diffusers and Alpha unit of the pod. We have also thrown in a video too!
The last Adaptalux product to come together now is the Control Pod, or more specifically the PCB. We are now back assembling the Lighting Arms, as we had a few weeks away from this whilst we organised final packaging graphic designs, instruction manuals and other important jobs that are required to launch Adaptalux such as Bluetooth SIG registration and patent region expansion.
The electronic PCB design for the Adaptalux Control Pod is now fully working and complete. Today it was sent to our supplier for quotation, so we expect production to begin within the next week or two for the pod PCB. We are also in the process of getting the micro controllers mass programmed before been sent to our PCB supplier. We should have working PCB samples by the end of April, which we can use to assemble the BETA pack Control Pods. We expect to begin shipping the rest of the awards during the second half of May, in the order we specified in our last update. This will be an ongoing process during May and June.
We now have final samples of the textured Control Pod. Below are final pictures of the latest prototype. This is what the Control Pod will look like when you receive it. What do you think?
The Adaptalux App
The Adaptalux App is now almost finished for iOS. We are now in the process of removing bugs and other minor glitches. As mentioned in the previous update, an Android release will follow after launch. Reasons for developing on iOS first are as follows:-
Our decision to develop on iOS first is because that is the platform our app developer works on everyday. Therefore, it suits our financial and skill resources much better to develop the app on iOS first. Developing on Android would take more time, more money (which we don’t have at the moment) and it would not allow us to focus on getting the app right on one platform first.
Furthermore, the app is now much more useful than it was ever going to be. In the original Kickstarter campaign, we didn’t even have wireless control via bluetooth. This was added as a stretch goal later on in the campaign via a external module. Please see update on April 15th 2015. We did not reach this stretch goal, but because we are awesome, we have worked really hard on maximising funds to incorporate bluetooth into the actual Control Pod from launch. This is something we did not have to do, and it would have probably avoided the delays… BUT we feel this added functionality expands the functions and usability of the product and app massively, and therefore will be well worth it. Adaptalux is completely usable without the app, it can be controlled manually (as the original KS campaign showed) or now wirelessly through the app.
Graphics for the packaging are now finalised. Due to the Easter period, our packaging supplier has had to focus on other projects, so we still have not had our packaging printed. We are confident we will have the packaging by the end of April, ready for shipping though.
Instructions for the packaging have now been finalised and will be printed next week. A big thank you to the individuals who gave us feedback on the instructions manual last week. The instructions will be available on our website in multiple languages, and a printed edition will be supplied with every pack. We have designed the instructions to be universal, therefore it mostly consists of diagrams rather than words.
The safety & warranty booklets are also going to be printed next week. All barcode labels have been printed and are ready to be applied to the packaging for stock and inventory purposes.
We have also designed “subject cards”, which will be randomly distributed in every pack. These give you colourful subject ideas to try using Adaptalux.
Updates should start coming thicker and faster now, as we finish more products, booklets, packaging etc. This is an exciting time for Adaptalux, we hope you can see we are working incredibly hard with the limited resources we have to make this product amazing.
To finish with, here is an image of Adaptalux finished products (apart from electronics in the pod). This is what you can expect to receive with your packs!
We are now officially in the year you will get Adaptalux in your hands!
This update covers the UK assembly progress and a revised launch schedule.
The photographs on this update are macro shots of ice on a paintbrush and macro shots of cake decorations (sugar sprinkles), photographed using Adaptalux.
First, the bad news. Unfortunately, as frustrating as this is for you and for us, It is not going to be possible to ship Adaptalux in February.
We were hoping to get the Control Pod PCB board designs sent out for manufacturing before the Chinese New Year holiday, however Bluetooth is taking longer than expected to integrate into the product and the App and more testing is required to ensure everything works seamlessly and functions perfectly. The good news is that all of our products are been assembled by hand in the UK by our team, meaning the quality is exceptional. We promise the added wait will definitely be worth it.
We strongly believe in delivering an exceptionally high quality product which will last for many years! We would rather take longer to ship these initial products. Our key goal here is to think about the future of this company, which largely depends on a successful launch. We hope you can accept that.
We are now proposing the following time scale, which gives us some extra time for any unforeseen circumstances too:-
End of January:- All 5,000 Colour Filters and Diffusers are now assembled, packed and ready to ship.
End of February:- All White Lighting Arms assembled in the UK and ready to ship.
End of March:- Coloured Lighting Arms assembled and ready to ship. Control Pod sub assemblies complete in the UK and ready for PCB assembly. Packaging stored ready for shipping. PCB design fully complete, tested and sent out for manufacturing.
End of April:- PCB’s received and UK assembled into Control Pods. CE and FCC marking done and complete. Ship out BETA & review packs 4 weeks in advance to other pledges.
End of May:- Shipping underway for rest of Kickstarter pledges, order of shipping to be as follows:-
1) SUPER MEGA ULTIMATE AWESOME PACKS
2) ULTIMATE PACK
3) COMBO PACK
4) GOLDEN HOUR (ALL KICKSTARTER PLEDGES FULFILLED)
5) WEBSITE PRE-ORDERS
We will try our best to ship out earlier than these dates and we really hope that we will be able too. Please accept our apologies for this delay and for the mis-calculation that a February launch would be possible back in September.
Manufacture and UK assembly:-
As mentioned, the UK assembly is now well under way. A big thanks to everything involved for helping us out to assemble the Adaptalux products. You are are real stars!
All 5,000 Colour Filters and Diffusers are now assembled, packed and ready to ship. These were completed in the first 3 weeks of January and we are very happy with the quality and functionality of these products.
The Lighting Arms are being assembled as we speak. This is quite an intensive process for such a small number of people assembling them here in the UK. The finished ones look amazing and have a very high quality feel to them thanks to the combination of anodised metals and high performance silicone materials used in their design.
The Control Pod is ready to have the tooling textured after the Chinese holiday, now that the joining method has been finalised and confirmed. The parts will then be sent here for assembly to begin. Here is an image of a mock up one, please bear in mind the finish is not final on this photo for the shell. This will be a matte finish once the tooling has been textured.
The Adaptalux App:-
Thank you for all of your feedback for the Adaptalux App. Sam had a meeting in Bournemouth with Gary (Electronics developer) and Colin (App developer) to go through the results last weekend. The first version of the App has now been confirmed and your feedback has been taken on board from the App BETA. We have also had some exciting new ideas for the App with regards to sharing Adaptalux Lighting Set-ups globally.
Quite a few of you have asked about an Android version, we simply do not have the funds at the moment to develop this. We are hoping once we have launched, we will be able to develop it later on in the summer. Its quite high up on our priority list so don’t worry we will work on it as soon as we are able too.
Packaging final samples have now been approved for the packs and Diffuser/Colour Filter individual boxes. We are just waiting for the final samples of the individual Lighting Arm packaging. We will then need to lay out the graphics on the NET designs and then they will be signed off, printed and manufactured. As soon as we have printed packaging, we will be posting images. We are expecting to receive these by the end of this month.
Again, we would like to apologise for the added delay, but as you can see it is coming together and it will be a fantastic product when we ship it. It is through your continuing support that we are pushing through and will get Adaptalux into your hands as soon as possible.
Seasons Greetings everyone! As promised, this update is crammed full of information with regards to where Adaptalux is now and what is left to do over the next couple of months.
Throughout this update there are Christmas macro photos taken by Sam using Adaptalux.
Lighting Arms Manufacturing Progress:-
The Lighting Arms are really taking shape now. We have all of the components and electronics apart from the male Adaptalux connector. This means, after Christmas the rest of the Lighting Arm sub-assemblies can take place here in the UK and then they can be finally finished off once the male adaptalux connectors arrive (expected beginning of January). Sam has been busy assembling some Lighting Arms to establish the optimum techniques to be used so we can assemble them quickly, yet keeping the very high standards of quality we have set ourselves.
Diffusers/Colour Filters Manufacturing Progress:-
Again, the diffusers and colour filters will be assembled in the UK after Christmas. The mass production quantities of the plastic parts have been manufactured, sonic welded together and are scheduled to get here on the 29th of December. The other parts we received quite some time back now. For those of you who missed it, here is the image of some trial assemblies Sam made a few weeks back using injection moulding samples.
Control Pod Manufacturing Update:-
The Control Pod will, as we have always said, be the last part to be assembled as it is the most complex. We have bullet pointed the list of jobs associated with the Control Pod below:-
Button assemblies and associated parts are complete and manufactured, waiting on the Control Pod Shell to be finished.
Electronics is now very close to being finished. These will then be turned in to a PCB design so they can be manufactured.
Part that the PCB mounts too has been sent off for tooling, we expect a quick turn around for this as it is a simple non-cosmetic part.
Bluetooth is working and on the electronic board, we just need to write the parameters for communication between the Control Pod and the App.
Female Adaptalux Connector is complete and signed off for mass production. Front plates are here in the UK, ready to be assembled.
Product Sticker that will go on the underside needs to be designed and printed.
Control Pod Shell has been injection molded for trial runs and testing. We are having a few teething problems getting the two halves to sonic weld together, but we have been assured it will work and we are expecting some news on this any time this week. Once this works, the tooling will be textured and samples will be sent to us for approval with button assemblies, assembled inside.
As you can see there is a fair amount left to do to this, but we feel it will all fall into place quite quickly once the Control Pod Shell is approved. We have improved the Control Pod, thus the Adaptalux overall functionality significantly since the Kickstarter campaign, and we assure you the wait will be worth it.
We are expecting to be able to assemble the Control Pod in early February if all goes smoothly and then we will be able to start our shipping schedule. BETA testers will be priority with a 4 week gap between other pledger shipping.
Sam had another meeting with the packaging company last Friday, who have taken Adaptalux on. Sam was amazed with the results and the prototypes using just card so it is fully recyclable! As you may have seen in a previous update, the packaging has been designed to double up as a transport case for your Adaptalux parts. The design is going to be optimised in the first week of January, and then the nets will be sent to James, who will apply the Adaptalux graphics for printing. We expect the packaging to be fully finished and delivered for the end of January.
The prototypes below are of the ULTIMATE PACK BOX. The COMBO PACK and STARTER PACK will be half the depth of this box, much more like a miniature cardboard suitcase. The Individual boxes for the Lighting Arms and Diffusers/Colour Filters are yet to be prototyped, but these will be very simple to do once the packs are complete.
The Instruction manual first draft we have had completed for quite some time now. Here is a sneaky preview of a page from it below.
We plan to release this as a download in January with a survey to complete for us to gauge if you understand it clearly or not. The final version will be printed and included in every pack and it will also be available to download as a pdf through our website.
CE & FCC Marking:-
Once we have a complete Adaptalux set, it will be sent off for CE marking and FCC approval immediately to a company near London, UK. We are hoping we will be able to get something sent off end of January, so approval should come nicely in time for launch.
Well, thats it for now everyone. We would like to thank you again for supporting us throughout the year. At this time last year, Adaptalux was just been finished as a master prototype for filming Kickstarter campaign. We feel it has developed leaps and bounds since the success of the Kickstarter, and we could not thank our amazing little community enough.
We have some exciting new announcements to make next year so keep tuned!
We wish everyone and their families a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Another month, another information crammed update! Things are starting to speed up again now as we head towards the end of the year with more and more parts getting here for assembly or approval. We have also made some key progress with the plastic parts for the Diffusers and Colour Filters, after 4 rounds of sampling to get the colour and transparency spot on, we are finally there. This means most of the plastic parts will enter mass production within the next two weeks and we should receive them pretty promptly!
The photos featured in this update are macro shots of marbles, photographed using Adaptalux. We really like how the unique lighting has made them look like abstract planets in space!
An important part of the design and manufacturing process is to trial sub-assembly methods to find the optimum method of putting components together at a quick rate but still maintaining high quality. Sam has been busy doing this with parts he has for the assemblies we will be doing in the UK.
With most of the parts now received for the Lighting Arms, Sam has been able to put together some samples. The only part we are waiting for is the connector, we should be receiving samples next week. So here are some Lighting Arm assemblies that are 90% complete for you to feast your eyes upon.
Colour Filters and Diffusers:-
As mentioned, these have been under a strenuous sampling process so the transparency and colour dyes used in the material are spot on for mass production. It was important to take our time with these, as the material properties used in the injection moulding process has a great effect on the photographic properties of these parts. Too transparent, the parts do not diffuse enough light and colour onto the subject. Too opaque, not enough light comes through the parts to have a positive effect on your photo. We have finally landed on the perfect mixing ratios to produce these parts and they will be entering mass production within the next two weeks.
LED PCB sub-assemblies:-
Some sub-assemblies are been done by our suppliers in China. These sub-assemblies involve PCB based components where re-flow soldering is required.
We are pleased to report they are absolutely spot on and have been approved for all 5 LED colours. Mass production quantities will be completed in the next couple of weeks by our supplier.
We are expecting to receive the first samples for the connector design on Monday. This is a massive step in the Adaptalux manufacturing schedule. These will be featured in the next update once we have fully tested and approved them.
The Adaptalux App:-
The Adaptalux App is coming on well. It has had a dramatic makeover compared to the visuals we showed on our KS campaign back in April. We are about to move onto the bluetooth testing phase of the app development.
We plan to release a BETA App either at the end of this month or one of the first two weeks in December. This app will be a “offline” version, allowing you to create lighting set-ups on your phone, which in the full version you will be able to save for later. We will be needing your feedback to help us finalise the design and functionality of the app. We want you to tell us what works, and what doesn’t in terms of layout and ease of use. But more about this when the time comes!
Below are some screenshots of the App so far, but there is a lot to do to it yet!
Sam had a meeting with a packaging supplier last week and has been busy mocking up designs for the final packaging design. James has been busy doing the graphic design work for the packaging. Some photos below are of the cardboard prototype Sam has made, he will be going for a meeting again next week to get some professional samples made with print. Bare in mind this is a rough packaging prototype to prove function and final layout (so excuse the hot glue gun mess!).
Mass production of Injection Moulded Parts:-As mentioned, mass production for the plastic parts is now very close now we have been approving samples. Mass production will be done in a few days for most parts once started, then a further 5 days to ship to us.
So the Diffusers, Colour Filters, Button Caps, Control Pod sub-assembly internal parts are all now ready for mass production. We will be giving the go ahead within a couple of weeks.
The Control Pod shell is currently undergoing trialling with a sonic welding supplier. It will then be textured and samples sent here for approval.
Connector parts are on there way for approval.
There is one more simple plastic part left to order, which relies heavily on the PCB design. However, we are confident this can still be manufactured in time once the PCB design is complete.
Please Support the EV Mag Kickstarter campaign!
Our friends over at EV Mag are running a great Kickstarter campaign at the moment. EV Mag is a great photography E-magazine that you can download for free for your mobile devices. Adaptalux was featured in it during our Kickstarter campaign!
You can check it out for free HERE or HERE. We highly recommend that you do so.
Please support their campaign to help them keep creating a great E-Magazine. Furthermore, they are running a fantastic competition where three randomly drawn backers will win either a brand new iPad Pro with Apple Pencil OR a tripod kit from Really Right Stuff. Both prizes are worth over $1,000.
So that’s it for now everyone. There is a lot of information to take in and digest here, but rest assured everything is coming together. We are counting down the days until we can ship them and see what you can do with your Adaptalux…
Some exciting news and more progress pictures & information.
Nominated for a Lucie Technical Award
It is with great excitement that we can announce that Adaptalux has been nominated for a Lucie Technical award this year. The Lucie awards honour the greatest achievements in photography, and have been running since 2003. This year is the first time they have branched out into acknowledging the product developments in the photography field and Adaptalux has been nominated for “Best LED lighting Element”.
We are thrilled and so thankful to have been nominated and we cannot wait for the awards ceremony which is held on the 20th October on Broadway in New York. Unfortunately, Sam and Martin cannot attend the awards, so we are sending Bob and David, two of our New York Kickstarter backers to the event on our behalf. Adaptalux would not be possible without your help on Kickstarter, and we feel there is no better way of showing our appreciation for this than sending a couple of our Kickstarter backers to the events ceremony. More information about the awards HERE.
So fingers crossed we can pick up the award! But just happy to be nominated as it is.
Wall Adaptors have now arrived for the Adaptalux packs. We will only be providing N.America, EU and UK wall adaptors at the moment. I know we said we would provide wall adaptors for your specific country to all of our backers early on in the campaign, however, with 500 rewards to be fulfilled, it is not financially viable to do that anymore for us. N. America, EU and the UK make up a large percentage of our pledges on packs so we feel this is the best decision for now. If you are in another country outside of these areas, you will receive the US wall adaptor with your pack, which can then be used with a adaptor for your country. Regardless, Adaptalux can still be charged via USB via a computer or electronic device. We hope this is ok and you can understand.
Lighting Arm LED colour indicators
These are now on there way to the UK for assembly. We received pictures of them this week and we think they look fantastic. Sam has refined the shape a little, removing some rough edges and contour lines that were visible on the prototype. They are made out of high grade Aluminium with a anodised finish to give the colour and improve strength. Do you like them?
Beam Angle Adjuster Assembly
Sam has taken a couple of days to assemble all 3,500 of the beam angle adjuster heads this week with the help of his Mum (Thanks Mum) in the UK. These are now ready to be attached to the Lighting Arms. They work very well and have a very high quality feel to them.
Control Pod Tooling
The Control Pod tooling is now underway. We will be receiving dimensional samples in the coming weeks, then the tooling will be textured. We will then start the approval process before mass production for this part begins.
We are now starting to get costs and designs sampled for the packaging. We got sent plain samples this week to check dimensions of all the “pack” designs, card quality and general assembly. A picture below of the Starter pack box.
Next stage is to have a meeting with the packaging manufacturers next week to finalise and improve some areas. We will then be able to receive printed samples and once they are approved they will be manufactured. Once the cardboard elements are approved, we will be manufacturing vacuum formed trays to hold the Adaptalux items inside. More pictures to follow as this develops over the coming weeks.
Thats it for now everyone, follow our Facebook page for daily posts and updates.
