Here is an update with regards to the progress of the Stabilisers! A lot has happened in the past 3 weeks.
Firstly, we received the 3D printer 8 days ago, much earlier than we anticipated, which was very pleasing. Since then, Sam has built and calibrated the machine precisely, to ensure the prints we get off the machine are of a high quality.
We are now in an ongoing process of printing out test Stabilisers using different print settings. This is to ensure the final settings we choose, print Stabilisers that are of high quality, strong and have a reasonable printing time. Here are some detailed photographs showing the level of detail you can expect and the layer visibility in grey filament.
We are starting to get high-quality consistent prints of the Stabiliser at 0.15mm layer heights, therefore we are anticipating we can start shipping on Wednesday the 6th of March, well ahead of schedule! We plan to make and ship, so each time a Stabiliser is made it will be shipped on the same day.
Get the Stabiliser Award (£48):- We will be making & shipping this reward in batches of each colour. Printing will be done based on this colour order (chosen on colour popularity): Black, Grey, Clear, Green, Red & finally Blue. This reward will be shipped between the 6th of March – 10th of April.
Carbon Black Stabiliser (£64):- This reward will be manufactured and shipped after the above reward is completed. We anticipate shipping to begin for this reward between the 10th – 28th April.
Metal Composite Stabiliser (£75):- This reward will be shipped in March.

All close-up photos featured in this update have been captured using the fully finished Adaptalux product.
Firstly, here is a stop-animation video of the Combo Pack in full… enjoy.
Detailed packaging images:-
We already have designs completed to manufacture individual Lighting Arms and Diffuser/Colour Filter boxes. These can be manufactured as soon as we pay for it, but we felt it was best to utilise this extra money on the product for now with our limited resources and funds. Manufacturing the Starter, Combo and Ultimate packaging was very expensive, it would have really stretched us financially if we did it all at once.
What is left to do?
Things are certainly coming together. At the moment we are waiting for the sub-assemblies and PCB’s to arrive From China. We are expecting the PCB’s by the 7th of June and the sub-assemblies around the same time.
We are still assembling the Control Pod shells, but we are getting through it with are very small team. Once the PCB’s and sub-assemblies arrive, we plan to ship out the BETA pack awards alongside review units for some big websites and professional photographers. It will then be a case of making & shipping the product in parallel with each other through the upcoming months. Once the BETA awards have been shipped, we will put up a detailed shipping plan with dates for each award level and website orders. We have already organised and been approved for a Royal Mail Business shipping account and everything is in place to start shipping the product to you. For now, it seems June, July & August will be the months where shipping will occur, assuming everything goes smoothly from here.
Something to finish with…
To finish this update, we will leave you with how Adaptalux can be used to enhance your close-up images when used outside mounted on a camera. First, a image captured just using natural light (bright overcast day – white cloud).
Same subject and camera settings. But this time a Adaptalux has been mounted to the camera with a 50% brightness Red Lighting Arm & a 70% brightness White Lighting Arm.
Thanks everyone for your continued support. Next update we will start looking at the product features and the app.
Another update regarding the PCB problem we encountered last week.
We are pleased to say we have identified the issue on the PCB board samples and have successfully fixed the issue on the samples. We are now working on the most cost effective way of correcting the problem on the other boards with our supplier in China.
This now means we have a fully finished Control Pod here. Everything is working well and we are just fixing a few bugs on the app with regards to the bluetooth connection. We are planning on making some more videos when time allows as we are still busy assembling Control Pod shells. One feature we are particularly pleased with is the battery life, more to come on that in the next update.
We are expecting the finished packaging to arrive by the end of this week.
Now we have a fully working, complete Adaptalux unit we can start to show off some of the features. Firstly, brightness.
Below is the set-up used for brightness testing, the distance between the subject and Lighting Arm head was 10cm, and 20cm from the wall to the Lighting Arm head. This was shot in a room that was well illuminated with indirect natural sunlight due to large glass doors. Camera settings were:-
Shutter speed 1/100
We added one white Lighting Arm at a time at maximum brightness. We only went up to 4 Lighting Arms, with a 5th Lighting Arm you will gain another step of brightness.
Please find below a GIF of the brightness test going from no arms to 4 Lighting arms.
We wanted to share with you some photos of the finished products in full in this update, so please enjoy.
Its amazing how one day can have such a big impact on a project like this. I came to write this update this morning with great excitement, as the final PCB samples arrived. I was going to show the final product in a video and announce when shipping would start, but I am sorry to say there is a unexpected problem, which we did not anticipate.
We are currently investigating the PCB for an issue, which is causing the battery management system to fail. As a result, this is having an effect on how the program functions and how the power from the battery is delivered to the system. We are hoping to find the problem by the end of this week and we really hope you can all understand. Myself and the team can only apologise, we are extremely frustrated as we are so close to being able to ship the product to you guys. It is quite rare for a problem to arise between a final working electronic board to PCB production, which is why we were not expecting it at all, but we have to deal with it together and accept another small delay.
Due to this problem, shipping will now not begin until June, as we now have to identify the problem, fix it, get new PCB samples made and then mass produce the rest of the PCB’s. We think we can have new samples within 2-3 weeks, once approved the rest will swiftly follow and shipping can begin.
Please keep supporting us, we know its taking a while but your support is what keeps us going through frustrating times like this 🙂
What have we being up to?
We have been incredibly busy since our last update, assembling various Adaptalux products. Sorry for the silence once again, but rest assured everything is now coming together. With such a small team, our core priority at the moment is assembling Adaptalux.
Lighting Arm Assembly:-
All Lighting Arms have now being assembled and are ready to ship. We are exceptionally happy with the quality and durability of the design and we think you guys are going to love them too. We have plans to do a video soon (when time allows), showing off how strong the design is.
Control Pod Assembly
Control Pod assembly is now well underway. We are currently doing the sub-assemblies, which involves assembling the buttons into place and joining the two halves together.
The following jobs are remaining for the Control Pod:-
Finish sub-assemblies above.
We are waiting for the internal sub-assemblies to get here from our supplier in china, they said this should be within 2 weeks.
Once these arrive, we simply have to connect up the Control Pod and finish the assembly off once we have fixed the PCB.
All Control Pods will be fully cleaned at the end of the assembly and shipped.
We have finally been given a date for the finished packaging to arrive here. This is by next Wednesday (17th May). We will post an update once this arrives with some final packaged product shots!
Other news with packaging, the safety & warranty leaflets and also the instruction manuals have been printed and arrived with us last week. Here is a sneak peek at the instruction manual. Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on the manual last month, it helped us make the instructions as clear as possible. The instruction manual will also be available on our website in different languages, alongside a help and FAQ section.
The Adaptalux App for iOS is now pretty much finished. We are just working on adding a intuitive tutorial to it to help you around the app when you first start using it. We have now finished all work on the world library, a place where you can create lighting profiles using Adaptalux and share them with the world. Once the PCB is fixed, expect videos showing how the app and added functionality work together, to create a great product and enhance your photography and videography.
A Small Reminder…
Please bare in mind, we are an exceptionally small team for a project like this, with mostly part time people working on it, apart from Sam, who has committed all of his time on this idea and project for the last 3 years. He is a very busy guy at the moment and is trying his best to get these to you as quickly as possible. We cannot wait to get Adaptalux in to your hands, so we can see what amazing photographs and videos you can produce with it. We can’t thank this community enough for enabling this project to happen and the support you have given us over the past year both through the ups and downs.
For more daily updates, be sure to like and follow our Facebook page.
We are very excited to finally be able to announce today new Adaptalux features that we have implemented into the product. We were blown away by the Kickstarter campaign and all of your generous support, so we wanted to maximise the funds received to make the product even better. Detailed below are new product features that we have been working very hard on over summer. All of these features will be built into the first batch of the product, meaning you will be receiving more Adaptalux features than we originally outlined with your pledges and pre-orders! How awesome is that?
Built in Bluetooth!
We have now developed and built in bluetooth capability into every Control Pod. This expands Adaptalux’s capabilities significantly and means our original idea of having a bluetooth accessory that plugs into the back of the Control Pod is no longer required. This means you will now be able to control Adaptalux wirelessly with your android or iPhone devices straight out of the box.
We have built features into the App such as LIVE control as well as the ability to download and upload lighting configurations directly from the Control Pod to the app. This will allow the Adaptalux Lighting Library to be more detailed and all electronic data of a set-up will be available at the tap of a button for everybody.
The App itself is also coming along nicely. We are now working on the 3rd revision, optimising the best methods of controlling Adaptalux using the App so it is effortless and intuitive. We are hoping to release the App a month before the product launch, so people can experiment and build lighting set-ups in an “offline mode” in preparation of receiving the Adaptalux’s. The app will only be available to iPhone users at launch, swiftly followed by an Android version. More details about the Adaptalux App will be posted as updates as it progresses over the next few months.
To use Adaptalux via bluetooth is very simple. Simply hold the cycle button on the Control Pod for 2 seconds to make it enter a bluetooth seeking mode, and then simply connect to it using the Adaptalux App. Easy.
Improved Battery Life:-
One of the most common questions we have had are battery life concerns so we have listened and improved. Through some clever coding, we have improved the battery life by 5X without sacrificing any light output. This now means one single charge will provide 12 hours of use with 3 Lighting Arms connected at 50% brightness. This means 1 charge gives you a lot of time to master your Adaptalux lighting set-up for a subject when both in the field and at home.
New and improved Control Pod status indicator:-
The battery indicator LED on the Control Pod has now been upgraded to have a blue notification too alongside red and green. It will now indicate the following at a glance so you can stay focused on your photography work:-
Flashing Red:- Battery is getting low, lighting no longer suitable for free-hand shooting.
Constant Red:- Very low battery, charge immediately.
Flashing Green:- Charging
Constant Green:- Fully charged and still connected to external power source.
Flashing Blue:- Bluetooth mode enabled, seeking connection.
Constant Blue:- Bluetooth connection successful. Connected to the Adaptalux mobile App.
Help us spread the news about these amazing new features!
This update is a big deal for us and you guys! With these new features, Adaptalux will be better than ever and it’s all thanks to your generous pledges and support. We would really appreciate it if you would take a minute to spread the word regarding this update using social media. To share, simply click on the desired social media icon below, it’s that easy and it will mean a lot to us!
New Launch Dates:-
The downside to these new innovations and features is they have delayed our original schedule by some time. We are sorry about this but we think these new features are well worth waiting a little longer for and we hope you all agree too! The new schedule is outlined below:-
We are now anticipating a launch date in February 2016, although if we finish earlier it could be January. The BETA pledgers will receive their Adaptalux Kits 4 weeks before everyone else. Other Kickstarter pledges will then be fulfilled followed by website pre-orders.
A lot of Adaptalux has now been ordered and delivered. Here is a range of images of new parts received since the last update. The last item to order will be the Control Pod PCB with the new bluetooth functionality. We are going to be starting some of the sub-assemblies through October here in the UK.
Packaging design is now almost complete. We now need to seek a company to help us manufacture and assemble the packaging. We have designed as much as possible by ourselves to keep costs down. There will be packaging for the following:-
Individual Lighting Arms
Individual Diffusers/Colour Filters
More to follow regarding the packaging in the coming months including images of the designs and prototypes.
Winner of our mini-competition:-
The winner of our mini-competition ins our last update is Kevin L. Kitchens. His guess was 1,024 screws which was the closest. There were actually 1,998 screws in there believe it or not! Congratulations to Kevin and he won a free colour filter to add to his pack!
Thank you everyone for your continued support! For weekly images from Adaptalux be sure to follow our Flickr and Instagram pages.
Lots more progress photos to show you regarding the manufacture of Adaptalux, a little competition, Adaptalux photos and a build up to a very BIG update we have coming in September.
CNC Machining of parts:-
Adaptalux utilises parts that are made out of aluminium, which are machined to very tight tolerances and are anodised to give a hard and durable finish. These parts are now well under way and most are now heading into the anodising process. Dimensional checks have been completed and we are pleased to announce they are spot on. Here are some images!
The front plate for the Control Pod is also now in production. They have gone through the first phase of CNC machining and are about to enter the second phase.
Injection Molded Parts:-
We have received the first samples of some of the injection molded parts this week. They look great and have now been analysed in full and a report sent back to the supplier. There are some small details that need improving, but apart from that these parts should be ready to be mass produced very soon once a second set of improved samples are received, evaluated and approved.
A Big Delivery:-
Yesterday we received a big delivery of the flexible tubing for the Lighting Arms. Sam is quickly running out of garage space! They look great, have awesome movement and have a high quality feel to them. We are very pleased with them.
Parts such as USB cables and other small but crucial adaptalux parts have now been ordered and some have been received.
One of the other important parts we have received are the screws used for the assembly of the Control Pod. Guess how many screws are in the glass by using the photographs below. You have one week to submit your guesses via Facebook, Twitter or via the comments below. The closest guess will be crowned the winner, which will be announced in the next update and will receive a free diffuser or colour filter of their choice!
More Adaptalux photos:-
Sam has been capturing some more Adaptalux photos recently. Here are some below.
It’s also worth mentioning that a couple of Adaptalux photos got chosen to be on Flickr Explore. This is an area on Flickr that show cases the top photos on Flickr on a daily basis.
Water Droplet Bokeh has nearly reached 10,000 views with over 300 favourites! Click on the image to see it on Flickr.
Horsefly Face has also had over 4,500 views with 170 favourites! Click on the image to see it on Flickr.
An Exciting Announcement Coming Soon!
Some extra special developments are happening behind the scenes and we will be making a major announcement in September, which we know that existing KS backers and people who have pre-ordered are going to be delighted about! We are just ensuring everything is working properly before we commit to announcing it. We promise it will not disappoint!
Here is another update showing how the manufacturing side of Adaptalux has progressed recently, alongside other Adaptalux news.
The Adaptalux Photography Competition:-
We had so many great entries to our macro photography competition. It made our decision incredibly hard but at the same time it was a pleasure to view so many fantastic entries. You guys are a talented bunch of photographers thats for sure! We wish we could have given everyone a prize, but unfortunately there could only be one winner and a runner-up.
Congratulations to Ian Wilkinson with this jaw dropping image of a horsefly. This photo was focus stacked using a dead horsefly in indoor studio conditions. Adaptalux works at its finest used as a miniature studio and this image literally staggered us. The composition and details are exceptional. Ian has won an Adaptalux Starter pack OR more Lighting Arms and Effect components to add to his Ultimate pack. Again, congratulations Ian!
Well done to Alan Lasky for capturing this superb shot of a praying mantis. We really love how the green stands out against the black and blurred background, great composition again! We feel this photo really connects with the viewer because of the way the praying mantis is staring at you… scary but cool! Alan has won himself 2 x Lighting Arms of his choice. Well done!
We will be creating another blog post and update containing more of the competition images soon, there were plenty of amazing entries that need to be shared. Again, thank you to everyone who entered!
There have been a few design updates since we last posted an update. We will start with the Lighting Arms.
As LED technology progresses, so do we. Some new LEDs have recently came out that are brighter and have the same efficiency as the LEDs we were previously using. Sam thoroughly tested these LEDs out and decided they would be better for Adaptalux, with a whopping 22% gain in brightness! This means you will now be able to produce over 1,000 lumens of brightness by combining 5 white Lighting Arms together… amazing! Here are the updated LED specs:-
Sam has been carefully going through the Adaptalux design over the past few months, making it even better. The quality of this product is going to be exceptionally high, using CNC aluminium parts with glass fibre reinforced plastic parts. The Control Pod is now going to have 4 micro screws on the front to improve the assembly process and make the whole assembly even stronger. We do not see this as a bad thing aesthetically, many cameras have screws and we think it highlights the high quality of the product. The aluminium front plate will be matte anodised to a macbook pro finish. Here is a rendered image… we hope you like it…
A lot of parts are now on order for Adaptalux and the connector has now been finalised, optimised for manufacture and ordered. This is a huge step on the Adaptalux manufacture timeline! The electronics and App is also coming on well, and we have a few special surprises for everyone, which we might be able to announce soon! As soon as images come through of finished parts and tooling production, you will be the first to know.
A UK government innovation scheme (MAS) has approved Adaptalux to receive an additional £2,000 grant to help cover the CE marking costs. This is great news and they loved the product! CE & FCC marking is very expensive when done properly and we felt acquiring some additional funds to help cover these costs can only be a good thing.
We have enough money spare to design much better packaging than originally anticipated for our first few batches. James is going to start designing packaging over the next month and you will be kept up to date as always.
Thanks everyone! Keep taking macro photos and feel free to send them to us anytime, we love seeing your work and we almost always will give it a share! 🙂
