August News, Shipping Update + More Adaptalux Photos!

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the silence once again, we have been focused on fixing a Chinese supplier issue on one of the parts, which was mentioned in the previous update. All the images throughout this update have been taken by Adaptalux users.

CHINESE SUPPLIER ISSUE

As we highlighted in our last update, our shipping schedule had taken a hit as a second batch of parts for Adaptalux were not correct due to our Chinese supplier making a mistake. This slowed us down considerably with our assembly and shipping process as it was such a vital part. Throughout this month we have been working with them to identify what went wrong and how to improve there production methods to ensure this does not happen again. We are pleased to report the issue has now been solved and the fully working parts are now on the way to us in the UK, we expect to receive them on Thursday.

Image captured by David Robson using his Adaptalux.

Throughout the last few weeks, we have being shipping out 10 a week of the Ultimate pack award using parts from the good batch whilst we solved the supplier issue. From Thursday onwards, we will be solely focused on shipping and aiming to ship out 50 a week of the Ultimate Pack and following that 80 a week of the smaller packs. We aim to have all of the KS awards & website pre-orders shipped out by the 21st of October.

NEW SHIPPING SCHEDULE

Obviously, our original shipping schedule has been affected by this issue. You will receive a Kickstarter message with your tracking number once your Adaptalux has been dispatched, if you have not received this, your award has not yet been shipped. Our new schedule is as follows:-

  • Todays date  – 16th September = ULTIMATE PACK Kickstarter Award shipping. (IN PROGRESS).
  • Week beginning 19th September – 30th September = COMBO PACK Kickstarter Award shipping.

On a negative note, unfortunately our shipping schedule has taken a slight hit on time last week. We received the second half of a batch of one of the key Adaptalux sub-assemblies for the Pods, and unfortunately our Chinese supplier have made an assembly error on these particular ones. They are now working hard on re-making them and we should expect to receive them again within 2 – 3 weeks. Errors like this are well known when using Chinese suppliers on a tight manufacturing budget. We are confident the mistake will be amended and we are pleased are supplier is working with us, admitting to the error and working quickly to amend it.

The updated anticipated shipping schedule is as follows:-

  • Week beginning 8th August – 19th August = ULTIMATE PACK Kickstarter Award shipping.
  • Week beginning 22nd August – 2nd September = COMBO PACK Kickstarter Award shipping.
  • Week beginning 5th September August – 16th September = STARTER PACK Kickstarter Award Shipping.
  • Week beginning 19th September – 23rd September = ALL WEBSITE PRE-ORDERS SHIPPED.
  • SUPER ULTIMATE MEGA PACKS – SHIPPED!
  • BETA TESTER PACKS – SHIPPED!

We hope you can understand this small delay and again we thank you for your amazing patience and support.

Hello,

The packaging finally arrived yesterday and we are extremely pleased with it. Sam and his brother James, designed the packaging and worked with a packaging company to get it manufactured over the last few months. This has been a lengthy process, but the wait has been worth it. So sit back and prepare yourself for some Adaptalux eye candy.

Firstly, here is a stop-animation video of the Combo Pack in full… enjoy.

*All products will have there own polythene bags when shipped to you.

We already have designs completed to manufacture individual Lighting Arms and Diffuser/Colour Filter boxes. These can be manufactured as soon as we pay for it, but we felt it was best to utilise this extra money on the product for now with our limited resources and funds. Manufacturing the Starter, Combo and Ultimate packaging was very expensive, it would have really stretched us financially if we did it all at once.

What is left to do?

Things are certainly coming together. At the moment we are waiting for the sub-assemblies and PCB’s to arrive From China. We are expecting the PCB’s by the 7th of June and the sub-assemblies around the same time.

We are still assembling the Control Pod shells, but we are getting through it with are very small team. Once the PCB’s and sub-assemblies arrive, we plan to ship out the BETA pack awards alongside review units for some big websites and professional photographers. It will then be a case of making & shipping the product in parallel with each other through the upcoming months. Once the BETA awards have been shipped, we will put up a detailed shipping plan with dates for each award level and website orders. We have already organised and been approved for a Royal Mail Business shipping account and everything is in place to start shipping the product to you. For now, it seems June, July & August will be the months where shipping will occur, assuming everything goes smoothly from here.

Something to finish with…

To finish this update, we will leave you with how Adaptalux can be used to enhance your close-up images when used outside mounted on a camera. First, a image captured just using natural light (bright overcast day – white cloud).

Thanks everyone for your continued support. Next update we will start looking at the product features and the app.

Control Pod images + update on electronics.

Hi everyone,

Another update regarding the PCB problem we encountered last week.

We are pleased to say we have identified the issue on the PCB board samples and have successfully fixed the issue on the samples. We are now working on the most cost effective way of correcting the problem on the other boards with our supplier in China.

This now means we have a fully finished Control Pod here. Everything is working well and we are just fixing a few bugs on the app with regards to the bluetooth connection. We are planning on making some more videos when time allows as we are still busy assembling Control Pod shells. One feature we are particularly pleased with is the battery life, more to come on that in the next update.

We are expecting the finished packaging to arrive by the end of this week.

Brightness Test

Now we have a fully working, complete Adaptalux unit we can start to show off some of the features. Firstly, brightness.

Below is the set-up used for brightness testing, the distance between the subject and Lighting Arm head was 10cm, and 20cm from the wall to the Lighting Arm head. This was shot in a room that was well illuminated with indirect natural sunlight due to large glass doors. Camera settings were:-

  • Shutter speed 1/100
  • ISO 400
  • F11

We added one white Lighting Arm at a time at maximum brightness. We only went up to 4 Lighting Arms, with a 5th Lighting Arm you will gain another step of brightness.

Please find below a GIF of the brightness test going from no arms to 4 Lighting arms.

We wanted to share with you some photos of the finished products in full in this update, so please enjoy.

April Progress…

Hello everyone!

A small knock, but we will recover.

Its amazing how one day can have such a big impact on a project like this. I came to write this update this morning with great excitement, as the final PCB samples arrived.  I was going to show the final product in a video and announce when shipping would start, but I am sorry to say there is a unexpected problem, which we did not anticipate.

We are currently investigating the PCB for an issue, which is causing the battery management system to fail. As a result, this is having an effect on how the program functions and how the power from the battery is delivered to the system. We are hoping to find the problem by the end of this week and we really hope you can all understand. Myself and the team can only apologise, we are extremely frustrated as we are so close to being able to ship the product to you guys. It is quite rare for a problem to arise between a final working electronic board to PCB production, which is why we were not expecting it at all, but we have to deal with it together and accept another small delay.

Due to this problem, shipping will now not begin until June, as we now have to identify the problem, fix it, get new PCB samples made and then mass produce the rest of the PCB’s. We think we can have new samples within 2-3 weeks, once approved the rest will swiftly follow and shipping can begin.

Please keep supporting us, we know its taking a while but your support is what keeps us going through frustrating times like this 🙂

– Sam

What have we being up to?

We have been incredibly busy since our last update, assembling various Adaptalux products. Sorry for the silence once again, but rest assured everything is now coming together. With such a small team, our core priority at the moment is assembling Adaptalux.

Lighting Arm Assembly:-

All Lighting Arms have now being assembled and are ready to ship. We are exceptionally happy with the quality and durability of the design and we think you guys are going to love them too. We have plans to do a video soon (when time allows), showing off how strong the design is.

Control Pod Assembly

Control Pod assembly is now well underway. We are currently doing the sub-assemblies, which involves assembling the buttons into place and joining the two halves together.

Adding the button assemblies to the shell.

The following jobs are remaining for the Control Pod:-

  • Finish sub-assemblies above.
  • We are waiting for the internal sub-assemblies to get here from our supplier in china, they said this should be within 2 weeks.

Control Pod internal assembly.

  • Once these arrive, we simply have to connect up the Control Pod and finish the assembly off once we have fixed the PCB.
  • All Control Pods will be fully cleaned at the end of the assembly and shipped.

Packaging

We have finally been given a date for the finished packaging to arrive here. This is by next Wednesday (17th May). We will post an update once this arrives with some final packaged product shots!

Other news with packaging, the safety & warranty leaflets and also the instruction manuals have been printed and arrived with us last week. Here is a sneak peek at the instruction manual. Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on the manual last month, it helped us make the instructions as clear as possible. The instruction manual will also be available on our website in different languages, alongside a help and FAQ section.

The App

The Adaptalux App for iOS is now pretty much finished. We are just working on adding a intuitive tutorial to it to help you around the app when you first start using it. We have now finished all work on the world library, a place where you can create lighting profiles using Adaptalux and share them with the world. Once the PCB is fixed, expect videos showing how the app and added functionality work together, to create a great product and enhance your photography and videography.

A Small Reminder…

Please bare in mind, we are an exceptionally small team for a project like this, with mostly part time people working on it, apart from Sam, who has committed all of his time on this idea and project for the last 3 years. He is a very busy guy at the moment and is trying his best to get these to you as quickly as possible. We cannot wait to get Adaptalux in to your hands, so we can see what amazing photographs and videos you can produce with it. We can’t thank this community enough for enabling this project to happen and the support you have given us over the past year both through the ups and downs.
